FISHING LICENSES AND OTHER FAQs
Here I have compiled a list of general questions and information about what to expect, what to bring with you and links to how to get some of this done.
HOW AND WHERE DO I GET A FISHING LICENSE?
First and foremost, a fishing license for the waters where we will be fishing is required by everyone of age that chooses to take part in the charter. Make sure that you contact us before your trip to ensure that you get the right license.
Current law dictates the following:
- Michigan – anyone 17 years or older must obtain a license
- Ohio – anyone 16 years or older must obtain a license
- New York – anyone 16 years or older must obtain a license
Since laws are constantly changing we do not want to give you any information that could get you or us into any trouble so we have provided access to The Michigan, Ohio Departments of Natural Resources and The New York Department of Environmental Conservation. Here you can check on eligibility, age limits, pricing and even purchase your license online.
We recommend that you purchase your license online. However, if you choose not to purchase your license online, then there are many places near our docks where you can purchase a license the day of your charter. Just ask the captain and he will show you to the right place.
DO I NEED TO BRING ANY FISHING GEAR OR EQUIPMENT WITH ME?
Absolutely not!!! All equipment and gear are provided as part of our services here at Legal Limit Charters. However, if you want to bring your favorite or lucky rod and reel your are more than welcome to do so.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?
A really quick way to ruin a fun day of fishing is by not bringing the right gear. Any fisherman knows that the weather on the lake can turn quickly (especially during the summer month) and thats why it is necessary to ensure that proper clothes and protections are brought along to ensure fun for all.
- Layers of clothes and rain gear due to sudden weather changes
- Sunscreen because the sun can get intense on the water
- A hat for the same reason as sunscreen
- Shoes appropriate for the boat (soft-soled shoes are preferable)
- All food and beverages for the length of your trip
- Sunglasses due to the intense glare of the sun off the water
- Motion sickness medicine (always check with your doctor before taking any over-the-counter drugs)
- A cooler large enough to carry all of your fish home with you
HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN COME ON THE CHARTER?
The amount of people that can be on the charter trip is dependent on how you set it up with us and can range anywhere from 1 to 6 people.
AT WHAT TIME DO YOU RECOMMEND I SHOW UP AT THE DOCK?
I recommend that you show up a ½ hour before your scheduled time to leave the dock.
CAN I PAY WITH A CREDIT CARD?
Legal Limit Charters does not directly accept credit cards. However, you can use any major credit card to safely and securely pay online at Paypal. Below is information regarding PayPal if you have any questions.

WHAT IS THE LATEST I CAN CANCEL MY CHARTER?
You can cancel your walleye or perch charter no less than 14 days from your scheduled charter. For Lake Ontario Salmon Charters, you can cancel no later than June 1st.
WHAT HAPPENS IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER?
Captain Richard Spieth makes all final determinations on whether or not a charter will be cancelled because of adverse weather conditions. If the captain decides that the weather is too bad to go out on the lake you will have two options:
- You can reschedule your charter to another open date
- You can get a refund of your $100.00 deposit
